Within the EU-funded ChronoPilot project in collaboration with the Timing Research Forum, the VR/AR Lab is part of the 1st TRF / ChronoPilot Summer School on “Modeling Altered Time Experiences in Human and Hybrid Collectives” which will take place from July 23 to 28 in Chios, Greece. The multidisciplinary attendees at master’s, doctoral, and early-career levels in Psychology, Neuroscience, Robotics, and Computational Sciences will learn how to employ XR technologies in time perception experiments.
The participants of the 8th ACM Europe Summer School on Computational Interaction (CIX'24) visited the VR/AR Lab on June 4, 2024. During the visit, we showcased several of our research projects and interactive systems in the lab, and the young HCI researchers and industry professionals were able to experience the latest mediated-reality technologies and user interface design approaches.
The VR/AR Lab recently welcomed a group of young artists as part of the Casino Display's Artistic Research Lab program, introducing them to mediated reality and its potential for artistic expression. We had a great time experimenting with the latest immersive technologies and virtual environments, in perfect keeping with and exploring this year's theme "Milieus of [Fictions] in Milieus".
Our paper "Rhythmic Stimuli and Time Experience in Virtual Reality" won a Scientific Paper Honorary Mention Award at the EuroXR 2023 International Conference in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The 20th edition of the EuroXR Association's main conference was part of Immersive Tech Week and featured a great program. The paper discusses the effects of audiovisual rhythmic stimuli on timing in a VR-based sorting task context.
Our activity "ChronoPilot: Alter Your Perception of Time!" at the Science Festival 2023 showcased the central ideas behind the VR/AR Lab's eponymous EU-funded H2020 FET Open project to a wider audience. The event took place at Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg City, with more than 11,000 attendees over the course of four days and hundreds experiencing our VR demonstration while others watched the action projected on screen, learning about various advanced time modulation techniques and temporal illusions.
The VR/AR Lab's work was recently introduced to a broader audience by Jean Botev, who was invited to have a conversation with renowned artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster on March 17, 2023, at Casino Luxembourg, discussing her VR artwork Endodrome and the general potential of virtual reality for artistic expression and experience.
The VR/AR Lab projects and mediated reality approaches were presented by Jean Botev at the Frozen Atlantis Workshop at the end of January 2023 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Frozen Atlantis is an academic project that focuses on storytelling and novel formats, interfaces, and experiences to explore different narratives. Sahar Niknam presented her research and our EU-funded H2020 FET Open project ChronoPilot at this year's Science Slam at Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg City on September 30, 2022. The event nearly sold out with close to 200 visitors, and featured an awesome set of presentations and overall programme.
Our next digital treasure hunt, the Minett Stories Rallye, will go live at the end of February. It was developed in collaboration with the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) to promote the Esch2022 exhibition “Remixing Industrial Pasts – Constructing the Identity of the Minett” (February 27, 2022 - May 15, 2022) at the Massenoire in Esch Belval. The game allows discovering on site various places related to the history of the area's industrial past.
Our mobile game engaging players in a digital treasure hunt around Luxembourg City will go live on June 30, 2021. The Légionnaires Rallye was developed in collaboration with the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), to promote the Légionnaires exhibition (June 30, 2021 - February 28, 2022) at the Musée Dräi Eechelen. The game extends the exhibition outside the museum walls, allowing players to learn about the history of the Luxembourgish légionnaires while solving riddles and walking around the city.
Our demonstration "Forest SaVR – A Virtual-Reality Application to Raise Awareness of Deforestation" received the best demo/poster award at the 2020 GI VR/AR Workshop in Trier, Germany. The 17th edition of the main event of the VR/AR special interest group of the German Informatics Society was held virtually/online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Iris Kremer received the BiCS best project award for her first-year project, where she developed a web-based editor for georeferenced data. In her follow-up project ObDrop, she created a mobile AR application that enables users to place and interact with digital objects, which are shared with and visible to other users nearby.
Prime Minister Xavier Bettel visited our "My Life as a Robot" stand showcasing a VR-based remote robotic telepresence solution at the FNR Researchers’ Days 2018 in Esch/Belval, Luxembourg’s research and innovation hub. The sixth edition of this national science and research fair attracted more than 6,500 attendees over the course of two days. The strong presence at our stand throughout the event bid our capacities to strength with around 50-60 full system demonstrations per day to diverse visitor and age groups.
Our paper "CollaTrEx - Collaborative Context-Aware Training and Exploration" received the best paper award at the 2016 EAI International Conference for Design, Learning and Innovation in Esbjerg, Denmark. The conference is a prime venue for novel, trans-disciplinary approaches to interactive digital experiences, including virtual and augmented reality.
